Resume Format Guide: Chronological vs. Functional vs. Combination

There are three standard resume formats, and picking the wrong one for your situation is one of the most common self-inflicted mistakes candidates make. The choice isn't stylistic — it's about which format presents your specific work history in its strongest light, and recruiters recognize all three, so there's no format that reads as more "professional" in the abstract.

Chronological (the default choice)

Lists work experience in reverse-chronological order (most recent first), with each role showing company, title, dates, and bullet points. This is the format ATS systems parse most reliably and the one recruiters expect by default. Use it if you have a consistent work history in the field you're applying to — which covers the large majority of candidates.

Functional (skills-based)

Organizes the resume around skill categories ("Leadership," "Technical Skills") rather than a timeline of jobs, with work history reduced to a brief list at the bottom. This format is generally discouraged: it parses poorly in ATS systems, and experienced recruiters often read it as a signal that a candidate is trying to hide a gap or a lack of directly relevant experience — even when that isn't the actual reason.

Combination (hybrid)

Leads with a skills or core competencies summary, followed by a standard reverse-chronological work history. This works well for career changers who need to foreground transferable skills before a work history that doesn't obviously map to the target role, or for senior candidates consolidating a long career into a tight, skills-first framing.

Which format to choose

Default to chronological unless you have a specific reason not to: a career change (use combination), a long unexplained employment gap (combination, with the gap addressed briefly rather than hidden), or work history in an unrelated field to what you're now targeting (combination). Avoid pure functional format in almost all cases — the ATS and recruiter-trust costs outweigh the benefit of downplaying a timeline.
